From 2016 to 2018 the window gallery Schaufenstergalerie SCHARF at Stubenberggasse was organized and curated by contemporary collective graz. Schaufenstergalerie SCHARF questioned the White Cube per se. Art oscillated between the urban structure and the gallery space. Zwischen urbanem Stadtgefüge und Galerieraum oszillierend entstand Kunst. With the curation of Schaufenstergalerie SCHARF, the contemporary collective graz set itself the goal of reflecting on different socio-political and sometimes precarious themes within exhibition projects that oscillated between event and work.
Within three years 16 exhibitions with 23 artists and cooperations with esc medien kunst labor, galerie GALERIE, Ludwig Boltzmann–Institut für Kriegsfolgenforschung and with Kunstverein Roter Keil took place there.

LINIE KONKRET
“TANGIBLE LINE”
Elisabeth Gschiel
26th of September – 07th of November 2018
Elisabeth Gschiel appropriated the thread as an aesthetic medium. Textiles have a long history in art. Systems out of thread, lines that adumbrated contours. Loose threads at the ends give back the freedom to the lines and expand the form into infinity…. The installation by Elisabeth Gschiel at Schaufenstergalerie SCHARF stays in contrast to the surrounding shop windows with exquisit fashion. With her sewing machine, Gschiel depicts moments of life. In this process, the aesthetic effect is significant. For her unconventional working method, the artist transforms the sewing machine into a kind of “crayon” and uses it to work on different surfaces.
THEATRUM MUNDI
Niki Passath
23rd of June – 25th of September 2018
in cooperation with esc medien kunst labor and galerie GALERIE
the exhibition was part of Architektursommer 2018
The exhibition project THEATRUM MUNDI examines at three locations the development of world models and raises the question about their future shape. Considerations in quantum physics play a decisive role in the project, as they lead deterministic world models to absurdity and enable pluralistic thinking of the world. “Through quantum physics and quantum mechanics make many intellectual pastimes possible. In quantum physics, God is possible, so faith and the natural sciences no longer necessarily contradict each other.” (Niki Passath)
In principle, quantum physics changes our perspective on reality and actually contradicts our understanding, for example when it comes to the fact that a thing can exist in two places at the same time. The architecture of the spaces is the conceptual starting point of the exhibitions: Passath symbolizes the change of world models through his objects set in motion in the space and implements site-specific installations at Schaufenstergalerie SCHARF and at esc medien kunst labor, which are linked to the presentation of new art works by Passath at galerie GALERIE.

Erwin Stefanie Posarnig
17th of May – 21st of June 2018
In his works Erwin Stefanie Posarnig deals with current political issues. The freedom of the individual and the idea of a humanistically conceived society are significant for him. Posarnig mainly generates works in and with the public space. In his actions, interventions, performances, stickers and multiples the socially critical statement plays an important rule. The artist focuses on sociopolitical conditions and questions, such as e.g. security policy or surveillance issues – topics that currently attract increased attention. For Schaufenstergalerie SCHARF Posarnig developed a sticker and an installation. The sticker functions also as the pamphlet of the project and can remain present even beyond the duration of the exhibition. Consciously involving visitors in the work is characteristic of Posarnig’s artistic practice. The sticker asks a precarious question in four languages “Do you want total surveillance?”. The installation inside the two windows of Schaufenstergalerie SCHARF perpetuates this question.
